The Lancaster County Election Commissioner’s office has begun mailing early vote ballots for the May 6 city general election. Every voter who requested an early vote ballot through last Friday should receive their ballots by the end of this week, said Election Commissioner Todd Wiltgen. Voters can check the status of their early vote ballot at www.
votercheck.necvr.ne.
gov . Early vote ballot envelopes must be signed and received by the Election Commission by 8 p.m.
on May 6. They can be returned to the Election Commission in the self-addressed envelope enclosed with the ballots by mail or by dropping them off in the secure drop boxes at the Election Commission office, 601 N. 46th St.
or at four city library branches: Anderson, 3635 Touzalin Ave.; Eiseley, 1530 Superior St.; Gere, 2400 S.
56th St.; or Walt, 6701 S. 14th St.

Beginning Monday, Lincoln voters can pick up an early vote ballot or vote in person for the general election at the Election Office. Election Commission office hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m. Extended office hours will be April 25, 8 a.
m. to 6 p.m.
; April 30, 8 a.m. to 6 p.
m.; May 3, 10 a.m.
to noon; May 5, 7 a.m. to 5 p.
m. State law permits any registered voter to cast an early ballot. However, voters must request that ballot in writing.

Vote-by-mail applications for the general election must be received by the Election Commissioner’s Office by 6 p.m. on April 25.
Voters may disregard vote-by-mail applications from third-party organizations or campaigns if they have already completed and returned an application, Wiltgen said. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering hosted a competition in which college students from across the region used their own concrete mixes to design and build canoes -- some more than 20 feet long and weighing more than 300 pounds. Hundreds of thousands of Sandhill Cranes have been converging on the Platte Basin for their annual migration to their northern breeding grounds. Every spring, as sandhill cranes are migrating to their breeding grounds, cranes without partners will start pairing up.
During this time, the cranes perform dancing displays. Although the dancing is most common in the breeding season, the cranes can dance all year long. Sometimes the dance involves wing-flapping, bowing, and jumping.
