India is considering scrapping taxes on high-end Harley-Davidson bikes, most of whose models are imported from the US. Per reports, the center is proposing to impose zero tariffs as a part of its strategy to assuage American President Donald Trump. Most of the Harley-Davidson models are imported into India as Completely Built Units (CBU), excluding the X440.
The aforementioned model is manufactured by Hero Motorcorp. The import duties on motorcycles with 750 cc engines and above will be scrapped, per sources as published on Bloomberg. Per experts, the impact on the domestic market due to zero tariffs on bikes like Harley Davidson will have a minimal impact.
Imported high-end bikes barely make up the close to 16 million annual motorcycle sales in the country. Donald Trump has paused his retaliatory tariffs for 90 days and countries are negotiating to annul the trade wars. India, dubbed the “tariff king” by the American President, has been slapped with a 26% tariff.
Meanwhile, reactions poured in on social media, with netizens dropping hilarious memes. One user online quipped, “ Daal Chawal pe badha do .” Several users are worried if the zero tariff on Harley Davidson will impact Royal Enfield and Bullet’s market.
One jibed, “ Bullet to gayo .” “ Big blow to Royal Enfield ,” wrote another. Yet another user commented, 0 tariff to be levied on daily edible Harley-Davidson bikes, while luxury goods like Paneer, Buttermilk and Air conditioners will continue to be taxed at 5-28%.
