Vadodara: Additional commissioner of police Leena Patil ordered an inquiry into the police action against women and elderly citizens who were protesting the water supply crisis in their area on Tuesday. Residents of several colonies on New Sama Road had organized a protest over problems in drinking water supply. They planned to later take out a rally to the Ward 2 office.
Police reached the spot and tried to disperse the protesters. When the citizens refused to budge, police detained about 20 of them. Videos of policemen pushing and manhandling elderly women started circulating.
Congress leaders said people no longer had the right to raise their demands or hold protests. "A senior official has been ordered to conduct an inquiry into the incident. The inquiry will determine if the action taken by the cops was right and whether it was within legal constraints.
Action will be taken after the inquiry report is submitted," Patil said..
