Inspired by The Big Lunch Paula McIntyre creates hearty dishes made for sharing

The Big Lunch is an idea from the Eden Project that started in 2009. It takes place across the weekend of June 7-8 and is an annual celebration for neighbours or communities. This year they’re inviting people to enter their favourite family recipes into a nationwide competition. According to their research, four in ten adults say they’re more likely to cook from scratch now than they were five years ago. However, only a quarter of us say the lack of ideas stops us cooking more.

A big pot would have been placed in the middle of the table with accompanying dishes of potatoes and vegetables. My mum had a big red cast iron casserole and that usually meant meatballs would have been on the menu. I can still feel the anticipation of the lid being lifted off to reveal tasty orbs of meat in a delicious tomato sauce.

The first time I realised I was turning into an adult was forgoing a night out to invest in my own cast iron pot. When you have a big pot like this it ages well — every dish seasons the pan..
