Surat: The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Surat has organized a two-day symposium, Roots to Repository, which will begin on Friday, World Heritage Day , at the Art Gallery in Surat Fort. This year's theme, ‘Celebrate and Deliberate', focuses on finding ways to preserve and strengthen the spirit of the city, as reflected in its rich history and stories. The second edition of the symposium is being hosted with the support of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).

The event will feature experts from various fields who will present their insights. On the first day, eight speakers will share research on Surat's community, food, textiles, arts, flora, radio, theatre, and literature. The first day aims to celebrate the connection of the common man to the city.

The second day will focus on the protection of Surat's culture through practice, with discussions on how the city can safeguard and promote its heritage. The day will be divided into two sessions, featuring panellists from across the country who will share their insights on how Surtis can strengthen the city's cultural heritage through both policy and practice. "Surat and its heritage have many interpretations, with a vast array of untold stories and unexplored values.

Its inclusion in NITI Aayog's Growth Hubs Initiative, which aims to develop cities as engines of growth, provides an opportunity to highlight the city's untapped cultural potential. Identified as one of the four pilot cities in this initiative, Surat has the chance to bridge the gap in its cultural tourism sector," said an INTACH Surat statement. "Since the formation of the INTACH Surat chapter in 2012, a great deal of work has been done on the city's heritage.

While new research continues, INTACH Surat believes the Roots to Repository Symposium , which began in 2022, serves as a platform to connect aspiring heritage enthusiasts with decision-makers," the statement added..
