Ireland weather: Temperatures of 23 degrees forecast but thunderstorms also on the way

The hot and sunny weather will be present for all of this week to varying degrees, but people should be aware there's a thunderstorm risk for later on this week

Summer has finally arrived just ahead of May, and it looks like good news for people who are heading out to celebrate this bank holiday. Today and tomorrow are meant to be the warmest warm and driest days of the week. Today will be hot and dry, with long spells of hazy sunshine.

Highest temperatures of 17 to 22 degrees are expected. The dry weather will continue tonight with variable cloud and clear breaks. Lowest temperatures will be between 7 to 11 degrees.



Mist and fog patches will form in the light southeast, so drivers should take care. The good weather will continue on Wednesday, which will be warm and mostly sunny tomorrow. A few showers will bubble up in the afternoon, possibly heavy and thundery, but many places will stay dry.

Highest temperatures of 19 to 23 degrees are forecast. By Wednesday night, showers and thunderstorms will ease and die away and most places will be dry and clear. Thickening cloud in the northwest will gradually extend southeastwards overnight, with patchy outbreaks of light rain or drizzle affecting parts of Connacht and Ulster.

Areas of mist and fog will form too. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees are expected, with light variable breezes becoming light northerly in the north and west towards dawn. It will begin to turn cooler from the northwest through Thursday and Friday.

Thursday will see the country divided with a cold front acting as the dividing line between cooler conditions to the north and warmer conditions to the south. In Connacht and Ulster, Thursday will start out mostly cloudy with patchy rain and drizzle, but clearer, sunnier conditions will spread from the northwest for the afternoon. It'll feel much cooler with highest temperatures 12 to 16 degrees in light to moderate northerly winds.

In Leinster and Munster, Thursday will be mostly sunny to begin with. Cloud will build for the afternoon, with a few showers breaking out, some of these possibly heavy and thundery. Highest temperatures will range 17 to 21 degrees with light variable winds becoming light to moderate northerly later.

A mix of cloud and clear spells is forecast for Thursday night with showers persisting in southern coastal counties. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 11 degrees expected. Friday will be cooler and cloudier day overall, with a few light showers in the mix but some bright or sunny breaks at times too.

Highest temperatures of 12 to 16 degrees with a light to moderate northerly breeze. As for Friday night, it will be dry and mostly clear with a few mist and fog patches forming. Cloud will build in the north and northwest overnight.
