Is Nkhotakota North Dwangwa Constituency DPP or Chimunthu Banda Constituency?

By Zitoni MwansaDisputes are likely to occur in the primary elections in Nkhotakota North Constituency if what is being seen on social media is true.It’s has been reported by Times 360, quoting the district governor for Nkhotakota Dwangwa Mr Leni Phiri, that primary elections are going to be conducted today Monday 28 April 2025, without official calendar from the office of elections directorate of DPP.The Nkhotakota North primaries are going to be conducted through ballot papers on special request from the parliamentary shadow MPs.

However the elections will be conducted with some challenges, amongst them, without official communication from the office of director of election.Without areal voter registration verification and signing of the ballots by all participating candidates.Nkhotakota North Constituency has been represented by United Democratic Front (UDF) and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) since the dawn of democracy in Malawi.



The dominant Legistrator being former speaker of Parliament honourable Chimunthu Banda.However Chimunthu has been controversial in the way he has been conducting himself within DPP. And this year he is not stand as MP for the area.

But rumours are strong that he wants to chose his own successor among the 5 candidates who are representing the area. And he is Gift Chamayere, who once defected to UTM in the 2019 election.In interview with this journalist, Nkhunga resident Mr Khaila Mmadi, expressed his worry about the conduct of constituency executive committee and the district governor on the involved of honourable Chimunthu Banda on DPP party activities including elections and succession.
