ITV's This Morning was inundated with complaints as viewers implored the showrunners to terminate a segment prematurely. Presenters Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley were steering another episode of the beloved daytime TV show. However, their opening interview with magician Sophie Lloyd didn't captivate the audience.
Back in 1991, Sophie executed an astonishing feat by deceiving the Magic Circle into believing she was male to gain entry. Now, over three decades since her abrupt ejection from the patriarchal enclave, the Circle has sought out the ex-actress to offer an apology and restore her membership. Sophie recounted her experience on the ITV programme, detailing how she managed to dupe everyone about her gender until she was ousted, reports Wales Online .
Despite her intriguing narrative, viewers seemed to reach their limit and called for the segment to end. Social media was abuzz with comments, with one viewer posting on X: "Wake me when she's finished." Another viewer demanded: "Cut it now, what is this all about, no one cares.
" A third remarked: "This Magic Circle story is already about a week old.." A fourth pleaded: "Please make it stop!" while another criticised the segment as "scraping the barrel".
Sophie, recounting her covert operation to Sky News, revealed: "I'd played a boy before. It took months of preparation," she disclosed about her undercover mission infiltrating the Circle's ranks six months before women were allowed to officially join. She further remarked: "Really, going back 30 years, men's clubs were like, you know, just something you accepted.
" Since its inception in 1905, the Circle had upheld a males-only policy founded on the belief that women were incapable of keeping secrets. Lloyd understood the vexation faced by female magicians at the time and was adamant about taking on the challenge to prove that women could be as proficient in magic as men. The inspiration for her act actually came from a double routine conceived by Jenny Winstanley, a talented magician who herself had been rebuffed when she sought membership.
This Morning airs Mondays-Fridays at 10am on ITV1..
