Disney has moved James L. Brooks’ dramedy Ella McCay from Sept. 19 to Dec.
12. That puts the Woody Harrelson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Mackey, Ayo Edebiri, Rebecca Hall movie in a better position during awards season. If you go too soon sometimes, you could get forgotten.
Not to mention, September and October is very crowded with two-to-four wide entries dated each week, many targeting similar adult audiences. Ella McCay follow an idealistic young politician (Mackey) who juggles familial issues and a challenging work life while preparing to take over the job of her mentor, the state’s longtime incumbent governor. The strategic shift also puts Ella McCay in a better position to capitalize on Christmas/New Year’s holiday playtime.
There’s only one other release currently dated on the Dec 12 weekend — a wide expansion of Focus Features’ Hamnet . Ella McCay will debut following Zootopia 2 at Thanksgiving and Blumhouse/Universal’s Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 on Dec. 5 — which aren’t directly competitive.
