If Jordan Binnington is looking for a fight in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, he won't be getting it from the guy tending the other net. As the Winnipeg Jets were putting a bow on a 5-3 Game 1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night, the two teams engaged in some extracurricular activities that resulted in nine players combined getting 10-minute misconducts in the final minute.
During the second scrum in the Jets' end of the ice, Binnington, who has never backed down from a fight, appeared to skate out of his crease but turned back before joining the fray. The NHL's best are ready to battle for the right to hoist the Stanley Cup. Watch every game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ beginning on April 19.
After the game, Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck was asked if he thought Binnington was looking for a challenge. "A goalie fight in the playoffs would be dumb," the two-time Vezina winner replied. "That would just be dumb.
" Binnington wasn't asked about his intentions post-game, but it's been a long time since two goalies traded haymakers in the post-season. The last time it happened was on May 3, 1997, when Garth Snow of the Flyers and Steve Shields of the Sabres fought as part of a full-line brawl in Game 1 of their second-round series. The Flyers won the series in five games and reached the Stanley Cup Final before being swept by the Detroit Red Wings.
But thanks to the wonders of the internet, you can enjoy the brawl in all its glory..
