The Jammu and Kashmir government has taken a drastic step to ensure safety of visitors following a deadly Pahalgam terror attack and rising tensions along the Pakistan border. As many as 48 out of 87 tourist destinations, including popular parks, gardens, and resorts, have reportedly been shut down citing serious security threats. The closures, spread across eight districts, come in response to intelligence warnings of potential militant attacks after the horrific April 22 killings in the Baisaran meadows, where 26 tourists lost their lives.
In the aftermath of the attack, thousands of visitors have reportedly fled the region, and hotels reported mass cancellations. This delivered a big blow to Kashmir’s tourism-driven economy, which saw 3.5 million visitors in 2024.
Officials have described the closure of these tourist spots as a precautionary measure, with gates locked at vulnerable locations to prevent further attacks. 48 tourist spots closed in Kashmir following terror attack warnings #ITDigital #jammukashmir #PahalgamTerroristAttack pic.twitter.
com/ThCtAlfo15 — IndiaToday (@IndiaToday) April 29, 2025 Intelligence reports suggest that terrorists, possibly backed by Pakistan, are planning targeted strikes on tourists, security forces and non-locals, per India Today. The Resistance Front, a group linked to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), initially claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam massacre, though it later retracted the statement. India has accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism, leading to diplomatic fallout, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and the closure of the Attari-Wagah border crossing.
Pakistan has denied involvement, with its PM Shehbaz Sharif offering to launch an investigation.
