FARGO — The warmest temperature so far this spring measured in Fargo was 68 degrees on March 14. It was 64 degrees in Grand Forks that day. More recently, Grand Forks warmed to 71 degrees April 12.
That day in Fargo it was only 65 degrees. The warm weather in March was due to an early melt of a rather meager winter snow pack. Temperatures at that time were consistently a bit warmer in Fargo and the southern valley area than farther north due to the snow having melted more quickly leaving the top soil a bit drier.
More recently, the Grand Forks area has received slightly less rainfall this month than the Fargo area, causing a slightly drier top soil than in the Fargo area. This subtle difference is why Grand Forks recorded their first 70-degree day of the spring a few days earlier than average while the Fargo area still waits to hit 70 degrees this year.]]>.
