Surat: The body fished out from a canal in Olpad on April 9 was revealed to be that of a 40-year-old man, who was kidnapped by five people and fatally thrashed in a farmhouse a day earlier. The victim was identified as Pramod Chaudhary , a vegetable vendor in Kapodra, who was kidnapped in an SUV by five people on April 8. They suspected that his brother-in-law had eloped with the sister of one of them.

His wife, Arti, lodged a missing person report at the Kapodra police station on April 9. However, Kapodra police could not trace Chaudhary until April 14, when they received a tip-off that he was abducted. Based on the tip-off, police checked the CCTV footage of the area and found that Chaudhary was abducted on April 8 from his vegetable cart.

Based on the visuals, police detained one of the accused, Darshit Makwana, and interrogated him. Makwana told the police that his friend Mohit Parvadiya runs an auto garage where a man named Nitesh worked. Chaudhary's brother-in-law, Dhananjay, had eloped with Nitesh's sister.

On April 8, Parvadiya, Makwana, Nitesh, and two other friends, Kapil and Jay, went to the cart near Baroda Prestige market in an SUV. They forced Chaudhary inside, thinking that he would know about Dhananjay and Nitesh's sister. They started beating Chaudhary on the way and asked him the whereabouts of Dhananjay.

Thereafter, they took him to a farmhouse and beat him there as well until he fell unconscious. As the assailants feared that police would be searching for them, they dumped the body in Pipodara canal around 4:30am on April 9. Later that day, Olpad police retrieved the body and registered an accidental death case.

"We did not know about the abduction until April 14 when we got a tip-off that Chaudhary's brother-in-law had eloped with some girl. After that, we started investigating and solved the case. We have arrested two persons while others will be nabbed soon," said an officer.
