By Yusha’u A. Ibrahim (Bauchi) & Salim U. Ibrahim (Kano) Senator Sulaiman Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila has begun consultations with his constituents to decide whether to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following calls from party leaders in Kano South Senatorial District.
Reacting to the appeal, Sumaila said he had commenced “rigorous consultations” with his constituents and other stakeholders. “It is true the APC leaders from my district have called on me to return to APC. The leaders took the advantage of the internal crisis in my party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, which factionalised the party,” he said.
“And I am sure they are targeting me because they knew my political strength and commitment in politics. So, when the call persist, I have started consulting my constituents and all relevant stakeholders. So, even this issue, I will not decide it by myself, I will rather allow them to decide. “Whatever decision my constituents take, I will abide by it because in politics, consultation and openness are critical. So, one thing I can assure you is that I will not decide my fate alone and whatever my constituents decide, I will go by it,” he added.
Sixteen APC local government chairmen and their secretaries from Kano South had earlier appealed to the senator to return to the party. Speaking on their behalf, APC chairman of Albasu Local Government, Alhaji Iliya Jibrin Hungu, said Sumaila’s return would bolster the party’s chances in future elections. “If Senator Sumaila heeds our call and returns to the APC, no other party will stand a chance in Kano South.
His presence would unite our members and strengthen the party’s grassroots structure,” Hungu said. He described Sumaila as a bridge-builder who maintains relationships across political divides, adding, “This is the kind of politician we need—someone who prioritises unity and the collective interest.” Hungu also urged APC leaders, including the party’s national chairman, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to help persuade the senator to return.
Meanwhile, Ganduje on Tuesday held closed-door meeting with Sumaila and House of Representatives members, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, and Aliyu Sani Madaki — all members of the NNPP. Senior Special Assistant to the APC National Chairman on Visual Communication & Events, Aminu Dahiru, confirmed the meeting in a post on his verified social media handles on Tuesday. The meeting is said to be part of preparations for the politicians’ planned defection from the NNPP to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections Unlock AI's potential!
