Ludhiana: Jaskaran Singh, a 23-year-old from Bhamaddi village in Khanna, achieved a remarkable leap in the UPSC Civil Services Examination, moving from 595th rank in 2023 to 240th this year, securing a coveted IAS position . The son of Jagmohan Singh, an assistant sub-inspector and wireless operator with Punjab Police, and Amritpal Kaur, a teacher, Jaskaran drew inspiration from his family's service background. His grandfather, Karnail Singh, served in the Indian Army, motivating him to serve the nation.

Jaskaran completed his schooling at AS Modern School in Khanna and earned a Bachelor of Technology in Production and Industrial Engineering from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. Despite the competitive nature of the exam, he emphasised that aspirants do not need to spend large sums on coaching. "I prepared mostly on my own, studying from my native village," he said.

For his mains exam, he chose Punjabi literature as an optional subject. He advised future candidates to understand the preparation's entry and exit points and to have a professional degree as a fallback to avoid career uncertainty if the exam is not cleared. "Thorough practice of previous years' questions and confidence are key.

There is no need to pay hefty coaching fees. I am an example of that," Jaskaran said. Before this success, Jaskaran served in the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) in Andhra Pradesh after his earlier UPSC attempts.

His journey exemplifies perseverance and self-reliance in one of India's toughest examinations..
