The fire that had been burning for 18 consecutive days in Karachi’s Korangi area has finally been extinguished, local authorities confirmed on Monday. However, gas emissions continue from the site, releasing a strong odor and prompting safety concerns in the surrounding neighborhood. In light of the ongoing gas leak, the administration has imposed restrictions on access to the area, allowing only essential personnel to enter in order to safeguard public health and safety.

The incident began on March 29 when a private construction company initiated deep drilling—reaching depths of up to 1,200 feet—for a water bore on a vacant plot intended for a development project. During the drilling process, an unexpected gas leak occurred, which later ignited and caused a fire that raged for over two weeks. Just a day before the fire was extinguished, a spokesperson for the Sindh Chief Secretary mentioned that American experts might be brought in to help tackle the blaze, which had erupted near an oil refinery in the Korangi industrial area.
