PESHAWAR - Advisor to Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Finance and Inter-provincial Coordination Muzzammil Aslam, along with the party’s central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram, strongly criticised the three-year performance of the PDM government. At a press conference on Thursday, they stated that as the “anniversary” of the PDM government is marked, it is essential to compare its claims with the current economic realities. Sheikh Waqas rejected allegations of global isolation under Imran Khan’s tenure, citing strong diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia, China, and other Islamic countries.

He recalled that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman pledged $2 billion and $1.2 billion worth of oil without any formal request during Khan’s time. He criticised the current government for signing four IMF agreements in three years, despite previously blaming PTI for economic instability.

He questioned the effectiveness of their economic diplomacy, asking what tangible investment had been achieved despite claims of improved ties with foreign governments. He also condemned the appointment of a prime minister facing legal cases, calling it a mockery of national institutions. Waqas further accused the federal and Punjab governments of anti-farmer policies, equating them with being anti-Pakistan.

He noted that foreign reserves stood at $24 billion and the country’s credit rating was stronger.

According to him, the economic downturn began only after Khan’s departure, with $8 billion leaving the country in one month and GDP falling to 1.5%, the lowest in a decade. He cited international projections from institutions like the Asian Development Bank, which foresee minimal growth this year and next.

Aslam accused the government of over-reliance on the IMF, misleading the public while industrial and agricultural sectors continue to decline. Highlighting KP’s own economic progress, Aslam said that the provincial government overcame financial pressure and created an impact worth Rs. 250 billion.

Tax and non-tax revenue was increased by 49 percent, the development budget rose to 26 percent, and 80 percent of development funds have already been released. He added that liabilities under the health card scheme were reduced and that all ADP Plus funds would be disbursed by the end of May.
