New Delhi: Delhi govt has cancelled the leaves of all junior engineers and officials above them in the water, public works, and irrigation and flood control departments due to issues related to the rainy season. Issuing an order, the general administration department of Delhi govt stated that officials would be granted leave only in the case of a medical emergency involving themselves or close family members, after approval from the additional chief secretary or the principal secretary. The order will remain in place till Sept 15.

"As the monsoon is approaching, work must be carried out on a war footing to complete the desilting of drains, prevent waterlogging and flooding, repair roads and remove debris and silt from the roads and drains across the city," said the order. According to an estimate, there are nearly 400 waterlogging points spread across the national capital, and Delhi govt has appointed nodal officers for each of them. While the public works and irrigation and flood control departments have been assigned to desilt all drains by May 31, Delhi Jal Board has also been tasked with completing the cleaning of sewer lines before the monsoon.

PWD has deployed its engineers to supervise the repair of arterial roads and the filling of potholes before the monsoon hits the city in the last week of June. BJP govt has made several announcements that steps are being taken to ensure there are no cases of waterlogging during the monsoon this year. Officials said the engineers had been deputed as in charge of various vulnerable points to prevent waterlogging this year.

Automatic pumps have been deployed with operators on duty in shifts to deal with the situation of waterlogging in case of heavy downpours during the rainy season. The engineers have been warned of strict action if they fail to measure up to the challenge. "These engineers are involved in crucial work, and their presence on the job is important during the entire monsoon," said an official requesting anonymity.
