Letter: Election security needs increased funding to stay ahead of threats

Election workers need training, updated tools, and security support to keep pace with the threats we’re facing, says Anita Wertz of Tulsa.

I am a Tulsa County poll worker, and I’m proud of the reliable, efficient process we’ve built here in Oklahoma. But staying ahead of new threats takes real coordination and real resources. Every year brings new challenges.

Cyber threats are growing more sophisticated. There are more efforts to confuse or discourage voters. Local election offices are working hard to respond, but we can’t do it alone.

This is about being prepared. Election workers need training, updated tools, and security support to keep pace with the threats we’re facing. Without consistent federal investment, our ability to respond effectively is limited.

That’s why the Oklahoma congressional delegation — especially Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole — should push for increased federal funding for election security in next year’s federal budget. Oklahoma has an opportunity to lead, and our representatives should make this a priority. People are also reading.

Relying on sporadic funding leaves our systems vulnerable and our officials scrambling to keep up with emerging threats. Election workers are showing up and doing the work. We just need the resources to keep doing it right — and to stay ahead of whatever’s coming next.
