The proposed federal Health and Human Services budget threatens the ability of older adults to age well at home and in the community. The president’s budget dismantles and eliminates several vital aging programs in Solano and Napa counties funded under the Older Americans Act. The Solano Aging and Disability Resource Connection responds to 600 calls each month from caregivers, older adults and families.
HICAP assists thousands of people in understanding and choosing their best Medicare options. Ombudsman supports older adults living in skilled nursing facilities to ensure their safety. Napa/Solano’s Area Agency on Aging oversees the implementation of Older Americans Act programs and serves nearly 10,000 residents annually through funded programs that assists people with rides to medical appointments, connects older adults with companions to limit the negative effects of prolonged isolation, serves over 100,000 nutritious meals, and protects older adults from scammers.
The proposed cuts and eliminations are antithetical to the objectives of the Older Americans Act and will result in less support and fewer options for older adults and caregivers. Eliminating these and cutting back other needed programs will ensure more older adults dying. Your voice can make a difference.
Contact your senators and representatives; ask them to ensure that the federal administration of OAA programs follows the law and prevent the elimination of critical services to thousands of older adults in Napa and Solano counties. The number to call and make your voice heard is 202-224-3121. Richard White Fairfield.
