LG Electronics had big ambitions when they entered the smartphone market in Australia, the only problem is that consumers and carriers failed to buy their spin and those who did buy an LG smartphone complained about the quality. Now the South Korean Company is finally going to turn off their update servers. A trip to multiple social media sites reveals a multitude of complaints about the quality of LG smartphones.

On Reddit one owner wrote “LG released some absolute dogshit products that tanked their reputation and instead of focusing on iterating what was a solid product like the V30 they decided to go all in on gimmicks like the Flex, Wing, and G8X”. LG’s last flagship was the LG Wing, which debuted way back in October 2020. Following this, LG announced that it is pulling away from smartphones to focus on EVs in April 2021 after retailers and carriers stopped ranging the LG offering.

The brand later sold all of its smartphone related patents to other smartphone Companies like Oppo and other Chinese manufacturers. Another Reddit subscriber wrote “People nowadays remember LG with rose tinted glasses, saying how much they were innovating with new features. Granted, I’ll give some props to LG for trying something new, but most of their efforts went down the drain after one or two tries”.

They added “The LG wing and the whole modularity thing during the G5 series were something I don’t really get. No one really asked for the LG wing form factor, which LG also didn’t seem to know how to make that form factor work? The G5 was really ahead of its time, but fell short on delivering any future modules, which really left a lot of people disappointed on the LG brand”. Despite the mobile division being shut down, LG because of potential warranty issue claims kept online support for their last gen LG devices ongoing up to Android 12.

. Of late there has not been any major updates with LG now out of their 3 year obligation to provide support. All of LG’s smartphone services will go offline on 30th June 2025.

This announcement likely doesn’t affect many users, with consumers who purchased an LG smartphone including LG staff ditching their devices for devices from Samsung and other Android smartphone manufacturers. but it marks the complete end of LG smartphones. You never know, certain LG devices might become collector’s pieces in a couple of years.
