LG Uplus announced on April 23 that it has successfully demonstrated network failure prediction technology utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) in collaboration with the global telecommunications equipment provider Ericsson. The demonstration showcased the use of the Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF) technology, which analyzes network conditions based on AI and machine learning (ML) to proactively detect issues and automatically take corrective actions. NWDAF is a core component of next-generation network automation based on 3GPP international standards, tasked with real-time data analysis to predict failures and devise responses.
It is particularly effective in monitoring the quality of individual network slices in a slicing environment, ensuring service reliability. During the demonstration, LG Uplus and Ericsson presented a scenario where NWDAF detected traffic overload situations at base stations in real time and performed predictive and responsive actions tailored to each slice. This case showcased the potential for automated network operations, indicating a significant step towards building networks that can operate autonomously without human intervention.
Another technology demonstrated jointly by the two companies included the analysis of network usage patterns using AI/ML, diagnostics based on customer experience quality (KPI), and real-time cause analysis and prediction of voice quality issues. These capabilities allow operators to manage customer experiences more precisely and enable preventive actions before issues arise. To strengthen its technological capabilities, LG Uplus is actively participating in government initiatives alongside Ewha Womans University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, and ETRI, as well as in the development of intelligent 6G core technologies and distributed collaborative AI-based network automation technologies.
“This demonstration has laid the groundwork for automated operations that can prevent customer inconveniences in advance, and we will continue to broadly apply AI technology to our network infrastructure to enhance customer experiences,” said Lee Sang-hun, Head of Network Development at LG Uplus. “NWDAF plays a crucial role in the advancement of 5G networks, and this collaboration marks an important progress towards ensuring customized network quality for our customers,” said Hong Seok-won, Senior Vice President of Ericsson..
