Now in its 92nd edition, Historic Garden Week brings together 29 unique tours showcasing private homes, expansive gardens, and exquisite landscapes throughout Virginia. As the flowering dogwoods, daffodils, and red buds emerge, so too does an opportunity for visitors and locals alike to explore Virginia’s rich horticultural and architectural heritage. Your participation not only enriches your own experience but also contributes to the vital work of preserving Virginia’s landmark gardens for future generations.
“Whether you’re a gardening enthusiast, history buff, or simply looking for a delightful way to welcome spring, Historic Garden Week offers something for everyone,” a media release states. Three sites in Clarke County are on this year’s local Historic Garden Week tour, which will be held April 26. The tour is being hosted by The Winchester-Clarke Garden Club and The Little Garden Club.
The Clarke County tour meanders through pastoral countryside offering beauty and charm. Your tour can begin at any of the three sites: Long Branch, a historic home and farm; Fairview, with its equestrian dressage center, or Montevento, which was built in 1998 and is surrounded by spectacular grounds. “Guests will enjoy the culture of a county that thrives on community,” the release states.
“You will leave with a deeper appreciation for the history of this unspoiled area of Virginia.” More about the sites Long Branch: In 1810, Robert Carter Burwell began construction of this Federal-style manor house with a nearly 360-degree mountain view. Fairview: Nestled close to the historic village of Millwood, the gated entrance of Fairview offers a memorable approach to this 30-acre equestrian property.
Old oaks, walnuts, and locusts sweep across the front lawn, creating a picturesque setting. Montevento (“Windy Hill”): Is a 100-acre farm built in 1998 by the current owners, who had fallen in love with rural Virginia and appreciate classical design.
