The Fitchburg State softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with Lesley University on Wednesday, winning 7-0 in the opener and rallying for a 7-5 victory in game two at Donna Lee Withington Memorial Field.With the wins, the Falcons improve to 7-26 on the season.In the opener, Madison Solt was in complete control in the circle, going the distance for the shutout.
The junior scattered four hits and walked a pair, striking out five to improve to 4-11.A six-run first inning gave the Falcons all the offense they needed. Isabella Sousa (2-for-3) belted a double with the bags full, clearing the bases for a 3-0 lead.
Jessica Mueller, Shaelyn Burns and Danielle Forth all added RBIs in the opening frame.Carolyn Brodeur (two runs) scored the game’s final run, coming across in the sixth courtesy of an error on a ball hit by Priscilla Dillon.The Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two, courtesy of an RBI double from Emily Bennett and a two-run triple off the bat of Kaleigh Papierski.
The visiting Lynx tied the game in the top of the second before Dillon put Fitchburg State back in front in the third with an RBI single.The Lynx grabbed a 5-4 edge in the top of the fifth, but the Falcons responded in the bottom of the frame to go in front for good. Dillon and Papierski notched RBIs in the inning to put Fitchburg State back ahead and Adria McKenzie’s sac fly in the sixth scored Burns and gave the Falcons some insurance.
Sydney Gabay (2-6) picked up the win, throwing seven innings and allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk. The senior struck out three.High school softballLunenburg 16, Auburn 7: Heather Lombardo had a pair of doubles and four RBI as the Blue Knights (4-2) cruised to the win on the road, Chloe Koziol went 3-for-5 and drove in a pair, Sam Gallant notched three hits and three RBI and Mattie Thibault drove in a pair for Lunenburg, which erupted for seven runs in the first inning.
