Despite losing just one nonconference game heading into that night, LSU hit batters, handed out free bases and had only seven hits in its loss to the Demons. That night may have been at the forefront of LSU's mind heading into Tuesday's matchup at Alex Box Stadium with Southeastern Louisiana, a potential NCAA Tournament team. The Tigers were locked in from the start, scoring four runs in the first inning in its 15-2 win in seven innings over the top team in the Southland Conference.
Freshman Derek Curiel, junior Daniel Dickinson and senior Josh Pearson all finished with multiple hits. LSU went 7 for 18 with runners on base and was able to advance runners 13 times on 24 opportunities. Curiel and junior Jared Jones led off the first inning with consecutive solo home runs, with Curiel's blast coming on the first pitch of the inning.
Pearson followed up the homers with a two-run single that gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead. After going 2 for 2 with two walks on Tuesday, Curiel is 6 for 6 with two homers, two doubles, two singles and three walks since his 43-game on-base streak came to an end Saturday. LSU scored a run in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead before adding five more in the fourth to take a 10-2 lead.
In that frame, Dickinson and senior Michael Braswell both hit two-run singles while sophomore Jake Brown drove in a run on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman right-hander William Schmidt earned his sixth start of the year Tuesday. He went 31⁄3 innings while striking out seven batters and allowing four hits and two earned runs.
He was dominant through the first two frames, at one point striking out five consecutive batters before allowing a solo home run to lead off the third inning. Schmidt also surrendered a run-scoring double in the fourth before exiting for redshirt sophomore left-hander DJ Primeaux with one out. Primeaux got a groundout and a strikeout to strand the runner in scoring position before recording the first two outs of the fifth inning.
Redshirt sophomore right-hander Jaden Noot replaced Primeaux and got three strikeouts in 11⁄3 no-hit innings before handing the ball to junior left-hander Conner Ware. He tossed a scoreless seventh inning before junior Ethan Frey hit a grand slam in the bottom half of the frame to invoke the 10-run mercy rule. LSU continues its Southeastern Conference schedule Friday when it faces Texas A&M on the road.
First pitch from College Station, Texas, is set for 6 p.m. and will be available to stream on SEC Network+.
