It is needed for works that have not taken place since WWII

A major change is being made to a popular feature at Coombe Abbey that all visitors will notice. Fencing has been put around the duck and swan feeding spot at the Causeway at Coombe Pool. Bosses have explained that the water level is being lowered so staff can safely carry out essential maintenance on the dam wall.

It is a huge job as the pool has not been drained since World War II. "The water level in Coombe Pool will need to be lowered by 30cm," a Facebook post explains. "The Pool has not been drained since WWII, where it was fully drained because it was thought to have been used as a navigation aid by bombers targeting the city.

"By lowering the water level, the flow of water will divert away from the usual outflow structures, allowing for safe access so maintenance can be carried out." Among the works due to take place include the maintenance of the historical bell mouth weir, repairs to the crest and downslope of the dam wall to help improve flow and also to help 'manage erosion around important reservoir structures'.

The Facebook post concludes: "We apologise for any inconvenience while these essential works are being carried out.".
