A 63-year-old shouted abuse and swore at police who had wanted to question him on a different matter. Inverness Sheriff Court was told that Joseph Grant of Green Street, Rothes, had been taken to Burnett Road Police Station in Inverness for interview on July 30 last year, but he began uttering threats and referring to officers in a derogatory manner. Grant, who has Nairn connections, lives an itinerant lifestyle, his lawyer, Willie Young said.

He admitted threatening or abusive behaviour and was jailed for three months, backdated to March 17 when he was remanded in custody. Mr Young added: "He had been drinking heavily at the time and used inappropriate language. “I concede he has a poor record but when sober, he is a pleasant man.

" Sheriff Gary Aitken told Grant that because of his record, there was no alternative to a jail sentence..
