Emergency services, including police, were called to Pendennis Place around 3:10pm on Tuesday (April 23) following reports of an explosion. Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the man was initially taken to Derriford Hospital with serious injuries, but sadly later passed away. His next of kin have been informed.
A force spokesperson said: "Detectives are investigating a suspected gas explosion at a property in Penzance." “A man in his 40s and from Penzance was taken to Derriford Hospital with serious injuries but has sadly since passed away. His next of kin is aware.
” While a scene guard was initially established, police confirmed it has since been removed. Several residents from neighbouring flats were evacuated and have been provided with alternative accommodation. Police thanked the public for their understanding during the investigation.
Independent Cornwall Councillor for Penzance East, Tim Dwelly, also commented after a briefing from the Fire Service. He said: “I have been briefed by the Fire Service this morning on the fire yesterday. Early reports were wrong.
"Tragically, a resident in one of the flats has since died at Derriford after receiving serious burns following an explosion. “The fire service has told me that the fire was contained quickly. But they are carrying out a full investigation now into the explosion and its cause.
“If any resident needs help with Live West and what happens next, please do contact me if you have concerns. So sorry to hear of this tragedy.”.
