Ruben Amorim has given Manchester United fans a glimpse into the future by naming the ‘next Bukayo Saka ’ in his squad for tonight’s pivotal Europa League clash. United are in Bilbao ahead of their semi-final first leg against Athletic Club as they bid to salvage their season. Amorim’s side are struggling in 15th in the Premier League , and as it stands, won’t play European football next season.
Only Europa League glory and the reward of a place in the 2025/26 Champions League can change that. However, despite the importance of the clash in Spain, the Portuguese manager has sprung a surprise in his 26-man squad . Despite not yet making a senior appearance, 17-year-old Bendito Mantato was on the plane out.
The young forward has already made a name for himself on social media with clips of his skills and tricks at the ball of his feet going viral. Mantato has cemented a reputation for being a lightning-quick player who likes to dribble at defenders. He’s frequently been compared to Arsenal star Bukayo Saka , who, like Mantato, represented England at under-17 level.
The teenager endeared himself to club fans in February when he scored a 99th-minute winner against Arsenal in the FA Youth Cup quarter-final. His versatility has also been lauded, adept at full-back and in his favoured advanced role. Mantato is unlikely to start against Athletic Club.
However, Amorim could well decide to unleash him as an impact player, with fellow teenager Chido Obi previously being given first-team minutes this season. Amorim could view Mantato as the wildcard who could introduce some spark into the tie. His selection also appears to send a message to wide forwards Antony, Marcus Rashford , and Jadon Sancho , who are currently out on loan until the end of the season.
Introducing the Manchester-born starlet into his senior squad signals that the trio will unlikely be reintegrated into the club next season. United have been linked with Wolves ’ wide-man Matheus Cunha, but his £62.5million release clause could prove a stumbling block if they can’t secure the financial windfall of Champions League football.
