A heavy-drinking bully who left his terrified ex-girlfriend fearing that he would kill her – and menacingly warned her: "You're gone" – has finally been jailed after throwing away chances to avoid prison. Obsessed alcoholic Stephen Allen told the woman "You're f***ing dead, mate" during a prolonged campaign of harassment against her, Hull Crown Court heard. He was originally spared prison but he has now been locked up after committing new offences, including assaulting police.
Allen, 38, of Main Street, Swanland, but recently in custody on remand, admitted breaching an 18-month suspended prison sentence that had been imposed on June 17 last year. He admitted further offences of threatening behaviour and assaulting police on February 15 this year and causing criminal damage on August 3. James O'Connor, prosecuting, said that Allen was in breach of a suspended sentence imposed for an offence of harassment, causing fear of violence, between February 14 and March 3 last year.
The original hearing in June last year was told that the couple had known each other for many years and their previous relationship ended in December, 2023. Allen sent a large number of text messages to the woman and made a number of telephone calls as well as leaving threatening voicemails. On February 15 last year, he left a message saying: "You're f***ing dead, mate.
You watch me. You're gone. I have got you.
You are f***ing gone." On March 3 last year, Allen made 16 telephone calls in the early hours on a private number and he left threatening and abusive voicemail messages saying "I'm going to kill you. You're gone.
You're gone." Allen told his ex-girlfriend to look out of her window and she did so but she did not see him. She was in fear of him and feared that he could kill her.
The woman later lived with members of her family because she was too frightened to live alone in her own house. Allen was arrested but he denied the allegations or made no comment. He claimed that he was not aware that the woman did not want him to contact her.
Mr O'Connor said that the latest offences, in breach of the suspended sentence, included Allen smashing a window at a coffee shop in Swanland at about 4am on August 3 by using a milk urn. Three loud bangs were heard from the glass smashing. Allen, wearing a Hull City Football Club jumper, was identified from fingerprints.
The estimated cost of repairing the damage was £500. Mr O'Connor said that the assault and threatening behaviour offences happened on February 15 this year after Allen was asked to leave the Admiral of the Humber pub in Anlaby Road , west Hull. He was angry at being refused service but returned at 9pm.
He became aggressive with a male member of staff after being asked to leave and pointed in his face, shouting: "I'll bite your f***ing nose off" and "Tell him I'll smash his f***ing face in." Allen took a bottle from the bar and made threats to a member of staff. He was arrested but continued to be aggressive.
Police restrained him because he was being volatile and he was dragged to the ground. A spit hood was put around him but he continued to spit. While in a police van, he kicked out at a female officer's hand.
Allen had convictions for 56 previous offences, including seven for assaulting an emergency worker, assault, threatening behaviour, possessing a blade and seven offences of criminal damage. Nick Peacock, mitigating, said: "It's alcohol that is the problem. He has been an alcoholic for longer than he cares to remember really.
He had been doing quite well on the suspended sentence. "He has drunk too much and committed these offences. It's just not going to be cured overnight when you have got these problems with alcohol.
He has got himself in custody and got himself in real, real jeopardy." A spell in prison would help Allen to "dry out". He had been in custody since February 17.
"It may be that now there is a glimmer of help," said Mr Peacock. Allen was jailed for 20 months. The sentence included a consecutive 10 months for breaching the suspended sentence.
Judge Tahir Khan KC told Allen: "You committed these offences while subject to a suspended sentence order.".
