Marjorie Taylor Greene has found herself in hot water after tweeting that “evil is being defeated” just hours after Pope Francis died. The Georgia Republican Rep., who is notorious for her gender-critical and conspiracy theory-packed rhetoric, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday (22 April).
She wrote: “Today there were major shifts in global leaderships. Evil is being defeated by the hand of God.”Her tweet comes after the Vatican announced on Monday (21 April) that Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, died at the age of 88.
Onlookers called her message “absolutely atrocious” and warned her about “pushing” Catholics “away from our winning coalition”. “Marjorie, what kind of Christian dances on a man’s grave and calls it God’s will?”, another commented. “You read the Bible like it’s a QAnon blog post and still miss the part about humility.
”PinkNews has contacted a representative of Greene for further comment on the matter.Today there were major shifts in global leaderships.Evil is being defeated by the hand of God.
— Marjorie Taylor Greene (@mtgreenee) April 21, 2025 The Republican Rep. has previously faced criticism over her comments about the Catholic Church. In 2022, she accused the church of being run by “Satan” due to its charitable work in supporting migrants.
At the time, the Catholic League said that Greene’s comments were anti-catholic and “beyond the pale”. Greene responded at the time: “The Catholic League’s Bill Donohue accused me of slandering Catholics and Catholicism in an interview I gave to Michael Voris at Church Militant.“Nothing could be further from the truth, and he must apologise promptly and publicly for these words.
”It is not the first time that Greene has been subjected to backlash. Last year, the right-wing conservative sold T-shirts mocking mpox, despite there being 58 deaths in the US as a result of the outbreak. She was also loudly booed by onlookers during a speech she delivered outside of the Supreme Court last year about conspiratorial claims that trans youth are undergoing gender-affirming surgeries “before they’re old enough to join the military,” which is, broadly speaking, not true.
Furthermore, Greene allegedly said she would try to “fight” any trans women who would try to use the women’s toilets in the US Capitol building during the discourse surrounding the US Capitol trans bathroom ban.The post Marjorie Taylor Greene faces backlash for tweeting ‘evil being defeated’ after Pope Francis’ death appeared first on PinkNews | Latest lesbian, gay, bi and trans news | LGBTQ+ news..
