Instead of shining light on the perfect heroes, Marvel Thunderbolts brings together a group of messy anti-heroes with their flaws. Marvel is shifting gears with Thunderbolts, moving away from its usual lineup of polished superheroes and diving into the darker, messier side of its universe. Known for its wholesome humour and inspirational characters, Marvel now explores a team of flawed anti-heroes forced to come together to battle a mysterious and dangerous enemy — Sentry the Void.
Directed by Jake Schreier, the film is set to hit theatres on May 2 and promises a refreshing twist for fans, especially after Marvel’s recent string of underwhelming projects. One of the film’s central characters is Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan. Known as The Winter Soldier, Bucky first entered the MCU in Captain America: The First Avenger as Steve Rogers’ loyal friend.
Since then, he has evolved into a powerful fighter, teaming up with the Avengers and helping Sam Wilson take on the mantle of Captain America. In Thunderbolts, Bucky steps into a new role as a core member of this unlikely team, ready to lead — and fight — in a whole new way. Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova – Fans first met the character in Black Widow, where she reunited with her sister figure, Natasha Romanoff, played by Scarlett Johansson.
Both women were trained in the Red Room to become assassins. In the film, Yelena helps shut down the Red Room and free others who are trapped like her. Now, in Thunderbolts, Yelena joins a new team and is seen amid intense fight scenes in the trailer.
David Harbour plays Alexei Shostakov, aka Red Guardian – The Stranger Things star was first introduced in Black Widow as the father figure of Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova. Alexei was once the Soviet Union’s version of Captain America after he was given a different version of super soldier serum. He spent years fighting for his country before he was betrayed by General Dreykov.
In Black Widow, Alexei helped Natasha and Yelena destroy the Red Room. Wyatt Russell returns as John Walker, aka US Agent – The actor made his big debut in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as the man chosen to take Steve Rogers’ place as the new Captain America. At first, Walker looked like the right choice, but his short temper and ego led him to a darker path.
After a major mistake, he was removed from the prestigious position. However, he was later approached by Valentina, who gave him a second chance as the US Agent. Hannah John-Kamen as the Ghost – She first appeared in Ant-Man and the Wasp as a powerful but troubled villain.
After an accident when she was a child, Ava Starr gained the ability to turn invisible and pass through objects. Since then, Ghost has been missing from the MCU, but now she returns with a new look. In Thunderbolts, it looks like Ghost will be teaming with the other anti-heroes.
Olga Kurylenko returns as Antonia Dreykov, aka Taskmaster – Olga is the third actress from Black Widow, where she appeared as the daughter of General Dreykov, who used a chip to control her every move. The chip also gave her the special ability to copy the fighting styles of her opponents. After getting free at the end of Black Widow, Antonia’s future remains unclear.
In Thunderbolts, she joins the team alongside Yelena and Red Guardian. Fans are now eager to see how her character grows without her father’s control. Lewis Pullman joins Thunderbolts as Sentry the Void – Pullman got the big opportunity after Steven Yeun’s sudden exit.
Marvel confirmed his appearance during the latest trailer, as one of the most powerful individuals..
