The National Weather Service in Memphis reports a gloomy picture for the region with cloudy skies and impending rain. The current temperature stands at 67°F, with humidity levels high at 84%. Visibility is clear at 10 miles despite the overcast conditions, as the citizens brace for a day punctuated by showers and possible thunderstorms.
Southeast winds clock in at 3 mph, doing little to dispel the dampness that clings to the city's landscape.Residents can expect the likelihood of showers and thunderstorms primarily before 4 PM today, then once again after 5 PM. With a fairly calm south wind around 5 mph, the chance of precipitation hovers around 60%.
"New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms," warns the NWS forecast. This wet trend is slated to continue through the night, with an 80% likelihood of precipitation and additional rainfall possibly reaching a quarter of an inch in thunderstorms.Friday will not offer much reprieve, with a 90% chance of rain and potential thunderstorms forecasted to dampen the start of the weekend.
Even as the wind shifts southwest and accelerates slightly to 5 to 10 mph, the promise of persistent showers remains. These conditions are expected to continue into Friday night, though the probability of storms drops to 40%. On Saturday, the city can anticipate a 30% chance of rain amid partly sunny skies and a modest high near 78°F.
The National Weather Service has also issued a Flood Warning for regions along the Mississippi River, including areas like Helena, Memphis, and Tunica Mhoon Landing. As the river's stage was recorded at 35.1 feet last night, "minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast.
" At 36.0 feet, impacts will become more evident, with waters encroaching on Fullen Dock and local parks. The river is expected to recede below the flood stage early Saturday morning and continue declining over the following weeks.
