More info Beautiful weather for Scotland is firmly back on the agenda over the next few days , with Scots told to prepare record-breaking sunshine and toasty temperatures to usher in the beginning of May.
Scotland, along with the rest of the UK, is set to see a scorcher this week, with highs of 28C in expected across Britain. The "warmest spell of the year so far" will rise each day this week before peaking on Thursday, May 1. There is a small chance of the mercury climbing further to 29C, too.
So, with widespread sunshine on its way and the SPF being lathered on, the Met Office has waded in on the excitement to outline just how hot it will be. Aidan McGivern, the national forecaster's meteorologist, detailed how the elements will fare on May 1. "Temperatures are a degree or so higher across the board on first day of May," he explained.
"27C showing for London but a few spots show 29 and 30C...
there's always going to be a little bit of uncertainty depending on the weather model. The most likely temperatures we're expecting in south London and into southeast wales is 29C, while quite widely into the east and northwest of England we're talking the mid to high 20s." Aidan revealed the "remarkable" possibility of seeing 30C in some parts.
Although there's a small chance of the mercury rising this far - just 10-20 per cent - if it came through, it would be the earliest 30C ever recorded in the UK. "I think the earliest thus far is May 12, but May 1 would bring it forward significantly if it happened," he shared. Moving on the Scotland, the picture, as is often the case, looks a bit different compared to south of the border.
"There's quite a significant temperature contract because if we look further north, we've got high single figures and low double figures across northern Scotland into central Scotland," Aidan went on. "Through the Cairngorms and across the Highlands and into the Central Belt we're talking the mid teens. Northern Ireland will also not be as warm as Wednesday.
" However, this doesn't mean Scots should be disheartened. In fact, far from it, as today (Wednesday, April 30) will see Edinburgh hotter than Athens, while Glasgow will outdo temperatures in Barcelona, Ibiza, and Lisbon. And the nation is on to break records of its own.
"Parts of Spain and Portugal could see highs in the upper 20s, while here in Scotland, we’re likely to reach the mid-20s," Sean Batty, long-time weather expert, told STV . "So far, Scotland’s warmest day of the year was on April 10, when Durris and Aboyne in Aberdeenshire recorded 22.8°C.
But that record is likely to fall in the coming days, with 25°C possible – again, especially in Aberdeenshire. " Edinburgh and the Borders are also shaping up to be warm spots, potentially hitting the mid-20s." Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today.
