com Geoff Herbert | [email protected] Metallica just broke a 43-year-old record at the former Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.

The metal band performed Saturday night at the JMA Wireless Dome on the Syracuse University campus, blasting the crowd with hits like “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “Nothing Else Matters” and “Master of Puppets.” According to an SU official, Metallica broke the previous Dome concert attendance record of 47,319 set by The Who in 1982. Final numbers for Saturday night’s near-sellout show were not immediately available, but the official confirmed it was a new record.

Metallica was able to pack the Dome thanks to the band’s circular setup on the football field’s 50-yard line, allowing fans to pack the seats around the entire stadium, plus thousands more standing on the floor around the stage and inside the “snake pit.” The setup was also physically huge, with nearly 80 trucks required for the video, sound, lighting and more. It was Metallica’s first time performing in the Dome and the band’s first Syracuse concert since playing Lollapalooza at the New York State Fair in 1996.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group, featuring singer-guitarist James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, bassist Robert Trujillo and guitarist Kirk Hammett, is one of the best-selling music acts of all time with more than 125 million albums sold worldwide. The high-energy show also featured performances by opening acts Pantera and Suicidal Tendencies. A full review of the concert will be posted Sunday morning on syracuse.
