ABC 33/40 Meteorologist James Spann talked to Little Ridge Intermediate School students about the weather last week, in a long awaited visit to the school. Principal Jennifer List said two years ago, as third-graders were studying severe weather they began trying to get the busy Spann scheduled for a visit. One date was set but had to be canceled, and it took two years to get Spann in the school.
Students were enthusiastic for Spann’s presentation. He told students the hardest part of his job is “predicting the future. One of the first lessons he stressed for students was not science-related: It was geography.
Spann told students it is vital that they know where they are located in the state, and where other counties are as well, especially in times of threatening weather. That way, they can listen to forecasts and information about storm movements and understand whether they need to take precautions because a storm is headed their way. Everyone, he said, should have basic map skills.
