Mets infielder Jeff McNeil and catcher Francisco Alvarez were back in action as they continued their rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton on Saturday evening. McNeil led off the game with a single and then crushed a solo homer to deep right field in the top of the seventh, giving Binghamton a 7-0 lead. He played the full game at second base for the first time since returning and finished the night 2-for-5.
Alvarez caught the full game behind the plate and he finished 2-for-5 with a pair of knocks. The biggest storyline on the day, though, was the pitching performance from top prospect Nolan McLean. McLean continued his strong start to the Double-A season -- putting together six shutout innings to bring his ERA all the way down to 0.
60 through three outings. The right-hander was handed an early lead and cruised from there, retiring the side in order in the bottom of the first and then striking out a pair to strand a man in scoring position in the second. He ran into some command issues in the third, walking three straight batters to load the bases with two outs, but again rebounded nicely to punch out Hendry Mendez with a breaking ball to end the inning.
McLean walked the first batter he faced in the fourth, but again settled in well, retiring the next three batters to get out of the inning without any damage. He stranded a man in scoring position again in the fifth, picking up another strikeout in the process. He then finished his day with a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth, striking out the final batter he faced.
Overall, McLean allowed just two hits while walking four and striking out eight on the night. After putting together a strong spring showing, the 23-year-old has been tremendous over his first few outings of the season -- and if he can keep this up he just might find himself in Triple-A before you know it.For McNeil and Alvarez, they continue progressing well and just might be closing in on their returns.
