Shares 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 It’s full speed ahead for Universal’s video game film adaptation plans, as the studio is looking to bring Sega’s classic 1986 arcade series, OutRun , to the silver screen with the help of Hollywood superstars Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney . According to Deadline’s sources, Bay is set to direct the film with Sweeney on board as its producer, with its script written by Jayson Rothwell ( Silent Night ). Other producers include Sega’s Toru Nakahara ( Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy) and Bay’s Platinum Dunes partner Brad Fuller ( The Purge ).

Known for his work on action blockbusters like the live-action Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films, Bay has made a name for himself in Hollywood over the years. His production company, Platinum Dunes, which he founded alongside Fuller and Andrew Form in 2001, is best known for producing horror titles like A Quiet Place and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre . Sweeney, on the other hand, has become one of the most recognisable faces in film in recent years, appearing in movies and TV shows alike, such as Madame Web and Euphoria .



Off screen, the actress has been active on the producing front too, recently producing and starring in the nunsploitation horror film Immaculate alongside an upcoming Christy Martin biopic. Currently, the adaptations plot details remain vague, with no indication of whether Sweeney would star in it alongside producing. The OutRun arcade game saw massive success when it was released in 1986, not only pioneering a genre of driving games but also creating an electronic music subgenre of the same name.

Over the years, the series has spawned numerous spin-offs, remakes and sequels, with its latest title being 2014’s 3D Out Run for the Nintendo 3DS. With the many successes of video game adaptations in recent years, like Warner Bros. Pictures’ A Minecraft Movie and HBO’s The Last of Us TV series, Universal is looking to add another notch in its belt following its 2023 hits The Super Mario Bros.
