Michael van Gerwen has revealed that he will not represent the Netherlands at the World Cup of Darts. The three-time world champion is instead set to enjoy a ‘holiday’ whilst the competition unfolds. Van Gerwen has struggled with form and injuries so far this season, but his sensational victory at the German Darts Grand Prix highlighted how great of a force the world No.
3 can be. The 35-year-old impressed when beating fellow Dutchman Gian van Veen in the final. The match was a great spectacle, prompting conversations about how much of an impact the duo could be if they join forces at the World Cup of Darts.
However, Van Gerwen has stopped that train of thought in his tracks. Asked by dartsnews.com whether he could play alongside the 22-year-old at the competition in Frankfurt, Germany, he replied: “I won’t be part of the team this year – I’m on holiday.
” Van Gerwen then hinted that he may not represent the Netherlands in the competition again, adding: “Maybe it’s an option in the future – but you never know what might happen. Maybe I’ll never play in the World Cup of Darts again.” Based on the current world rankings, the Dutch are set to rely on Danny Noppert and Van Veen in the absence of Van Gerwen.
