EMPIRE, MI -- The term “dream job” gets thrown around far too often but finally there is a fair contender: Beach Ambassador on Lake Michigan. The Village of Empire grabbed the attention of Michigan sunbums with their quirky job posting. In a Leelanau County Facebook group the description was poetic: “Come work in Empire.
Where the sky is as blue as the water and the air smells of fresh water, sunshine and sunscreen.” It got even better as they laid out the terms of employment. “Only want a few hours a week? We can accommodate.
The boss? Cool and chill like Michigan. She is the best.” MLive called the clerk’s office to make sure this offer wasn’t too good to be true.
Deputy Clerk and “chill boss” Alacia Acton confirmed Empire has hired Beach Ambassadors for several years to help maintain Empire Beach Village Park’s hospitality. Beach Ambassador duties are a mix of friendly guide and parking enforcement. The public Empire Beach is just west of the walkable downtown along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
The park features grills, fire rings, a playgrounds and a mini lighthouse photo-opt at the Robert H. Manning Memorial Lighthouse. Beach Ambassadors are needed from 10 a.
m. to 6 p.m.
, but shifts can be flexible making this an ideal job for teachers, retirees and college students. The hourly rate is $18. Ambassadors must be 18 years or older and possess a high school diploma or GED.
While on duty, ambassadors will help visitors with the parking pass machine and direct traffic to the overflow parking area when the beach lot is full. They will also enforce parking safety to keep the fire lane clear and issue tickets to those not in compliance with the posted parking rules. Ambassadors will also help keep the parking and bathroom area free of debris, turn in lost items and report any maintenance issues.
A full list of duties can be found here . You can contact Acton for more information at [email protected].
