According to new figures, 31.4 million GP appointments were recorded in March, marking a 6.1 per cent increase from the same period last year and a 19.

8 per cent rise compared to pre-pandemic figures. The NHS attributes this to better access through upgraded technology. They can use online consultation forms, leaving phone and walk-in options for those who prefer not to go online.

The surgery also has voice recognition technology that transcribes messages for efficient triaging. Two GPs and two care navigators prioritise patient requests, with complex cases dealt with by GPs. The new contract set for October will modernise general practice by having GP surgeries allow patients to request appointments online during working hours.

Dr Amanda Doyle, national director for primary care and community services, said: "For some patients, contacting their practice using online methods can be more convenient and easier to access care for their health needs." Professor Bola Owolabi, a GP and NHS England director of healthcare inequalities, added: "Improving access to general practice is an NHS priority and GP teams are delivering 30 million appointments every month.".
