Minneapolis on High Alert for Severe Weather, NWS Issues Warnings for Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain

Minneapolis is poised for severe weather with a warning for potential thunderstorms and heavy rainfall issued by the NWS.

The Minneapolis area is bracing for a bout of severe weather today, with the National Weather Service (NWS) issuing a warning for potential hazardous conditions. According to a forecast published on the NWS website, there is a 60% chance of precipitation, including showers and possibly severe thunderstorms that could bring heavy rainfall to the region. Gusts reaching as high as 25 mph are expected, and new rainfall amounts could measure between three-quarters to one inch.

NWS forecast cautions residents of increasing clouds throughout the day with highs nearing 69 degrees.In a Hazardous Weather Outlook, the NWS alerts that, in addition to heavy rain, there's potential for large hail as the primary severe hazard. Damaging winds and a brief tornado, erupting mainly across southern Minnesota, cannot be ruled out, and scattered thunderstorms are on the cards.



This evening, anticipating severe storms, SKYWARN spotter activation may be required.As the evening progresses, the weather situation appears to intensify with a 90% chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2am. Residents could also experience patchy fog between midnight and 3am, and additional rainfall amounts could range from a quarter to half an inch.

The low is expected to be around 45 degrees, with southeast winds transitioning to northwest after midnight.Heading into the weekend, the forecast suggests a reduction in severe weather conditions. A mere 10% chance of showers is forecast before 7 pm on Friday, and skies will clear up, delivering a mostly cloudy evening with a low around 35 degrees.

Saturday promises sunny skies with highs nearing 55 degrees, and a relaxing northwest wind moving at 5 to 10 mph. Even as clouds increase on Sunday with a 30% chance of showers post 1 pm, it seems the tumultuous weather will have given Minneapolis a respite..
