There is a risk for thunderstorms and severe weather on Monday and into Tuesday for all of Michigan. That risk has also increased for one part of the state, the National Weather Service said today in a forecast update. Here’s what we know: As MLive Chief Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa told us on Friday, a big severe weather outbreak is expected west of the Great Lakes - in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin - on Monday afternoon.
For us, that means the active storm period would be Monday night and again into Tuesday. While storms are typically less severe in the evening hours because our air is cooler, the NWS forecast notes say a squall line of storms could cross Lake Michigan later Monday. This could bring damaging winds into the Lakeshore area in West Michigan and Northern Michigan, and then move inland.
These storms could refire on Tuesday, NWS meteorologists said. In the Upper Peninsula, Monday’s severe weather risk has increased to a Level 3 on a 5-point scale. In addition to damaging winds, large hail is in the forecast for these storms.
Monday's severe weather threat has increased for the western half of the Upper Peninsula. Graphic provided by the NWS “Confidence continues to grow that Monday, the atmosphere will be capable of producing strong to severe thunderstorms across Upper Michigan,” the NWS team in Marquette said today. “Stay tuned to upcoming forecast updates and be prepared to alter outside plans Monday.
