KOLLAM: More than twenty baby vipers (snakelets) were caught from the courtyard of a house. They were caught from Ashwin Dharan's house in Kulasekhapuram near Vavvakavu in Kollam. The snakelet was first seen in front of the house around 10 am today.
Later, they were also found in the pond used for raising fish near the house. The family members covered the snakelet seen near the house with a bucket and then informed snake catcher T K Kuttappan. He came and caught more snakelets.
The entire area was searched, but the mother viper( one of the most venomous snakes) could not be found. The search that started in the morning ended in the afternoon. The snakelets caught are expected to be about two weeks old.
They are in good health. Therefore, it is suspected that there may be more snakelets and they could have crawled into the surrounding areas, said Kuttappan. Local residents have been warned in this regard.
The baby vipers will be handed over to the forest department officials in Konni. 75 snakelets of a viper were caught from a house at Palode in Thiruvananthapuram last week. They were caught in a search conducted by snake catcher Raji Ratnakaran of Nandiyodu.
The search which started at 10 am, ended in the evening. Raji said that the forest department had informed that it was a record. It is the time for the vipers to give birth now.
They give birth in a suitable environment. Vipers are deadly poisonous. Therefore, officials said that those who go out at night should be especially careful.
