Lauren Irwin Most Americans believe the United States isn’t doing enough to protect the environment, a new survey found. According to a poll, released Thursday by Gallup, 57 percent of Americans say the government is doing too little to protect the environment. That’s up seven percentage points from last year’s survey, in which 50 percent said too little was being done.

Thirty percent of U.S. adults say the government is doing “about the right amount,” and 11 percent say there is “too much” being done to protect the environment.

Gallup noted that over three decades of survey data shows Americans have consistently said the government isn’t doing enough to protect the environment. The opinions fluctuate based on who is in office, the survey found. More Americans generally say the government is doing too little on the environment when a Republican administration leads than during a Democratic presidency.

Former President Obama received the lowest readings, all below 50 percent. The survey was conducted March 3-16, shortly after President Trump and his administration rolled back decades of environmental policy, laying the groundwork for overhauling the way the government implements a bedrock environmental law. While Americans have tended to have negative attitudes about the government’s handling of the environment for decades, the survey found opinions slipped again this year.
