The incident follows claims by an unidentified third party of accessing portions of MTN’s systems, prompting an internal investigation and collaboration with law enforcement agencies. In a statement, the telecommunications giant emphasized there is no evidence that customer accounts or mobile money (MoMo) wallets were directly compromised. “Our cybersecurity protocols were immediately activated, and we are working closely with authorities, including the South African Police Service and the Hawks, to address this matter,” the company said.

Impacted customers are being notified in compliance with regional data protection laws.Despite these assurances, social media reports in Ghana have surfaced alleging unauthorized withdrawals from MTN MoMo accounts. Some users speculate victims may have inadvertently shared personal details with fraudsters posing as company representatives.

MTN has not confirmed a direct link between these incidents and the broader breach but urged customers to exercise vigilance. The company advised users to enable multifactor authentication, update devices regularly, and avoid suspicious links or unsolicited requests for information. It also recommended placing fraud alerts on credit reports as a precautionary measure.

The breach underscores growing cybersecurity risks as digital services expand rapidly across Africa. MTN, which operates in 19 countries, has faced similar challenges in recent years, reflecting broader industry vulnerabilities. Analysts note that while telecom providers have strengthened encryption and monitoring systems, sophisticated phishing schemes and social engineering tactics continue to target users.

Regulatory bodies in multiple African nations are increasingly mandating stricter data protection frameworks, though enforcement remains uneven.MTN’s proactive engagement with law enforcement aligns with regional efforts to combat cybercrime, particularly as mobile money platforms gain prominence. The incident highlights the dual responsibility of corporations and customers in safeguarding digital ecosystems—a balance that will likely define Africa’s evolving tech landscape.
