AUSTIN, Texas — While the weather has been generally quiet across Central Texas for the time being, another round of rain and storm chances will quickly approach this week. On Wednesday afternoon and evening, moisture and instability from West Texas will finally shift eastward, causing showers and thunderstorms to fire up along the Interstate 35 corridor, from San Antonio to Dallas. The best confidence in severe weather potential stays north of Austin, for areas east of Abilene through Dallas, and down through Waco as well.
Austin has a low-end chance for severe weather at this time, with a level 1 out of 5 "marginal" risk, outlined by the Storm Prediction Center below. If storm cells do reach severe limits, hail and damaging winds are expected to be our main impacts. Tornado risk is very low, but not zero.
Storm timeline Wednesday afternoon between 2 p.m. and 8 p.
m. will be the main timeframe for showers or storms to spark up. Not everyone is expected to see rainfall, but current model outputs do bring downpours close to the Austin metro and I-35 corridor, so be sure to keep the rain gear handy if you have Wednesday evening plans.
Later in the night on Wednesday (10 p.m. to midnight), there is the possibility that a couple of strong, but still isolated, storms will be lingering just outside Central Texas.
We will watch and see if they come close to our northern counties and adjust the severe weather timeline accordingly. Again, most of our wet weather will be in the late afternoon/early evening. Friday notes Details on severe weather for Friday afternoon are not yet available, but there is increasing confidence that Central Texas will get another round of beneficial rainfall in some spots.
While Wednesday and Friday are the main chances for rain, a 20% to 30% daily rain chance continues through the upcoming weekend too. It looks like this will favor neighborhoods west of I-35 the most, but as always, we need a lot more rain to help relieve severe drought conditions. Details on severe weather potential will be posted here as we shift through the middle of the workweek.
In the meantime, here is your seven-day forecast..
