Google is finally preparing to roll out access to its Gemini AI app for a significantly younger audience. In an email sent out to parents who Family Link, the company announced that children under the age of 13 with supervised accounts will soon be able to utilize the Gemini app across Android, iOS, and the web. This move also includes the option for Gemini to be set as the default assistant on Android devices, potentially replacing the Google Assistant for these users.
Google is positioning this expansion as a tool for learning and creativity, highlighting potential use cases such as getting homework help, asking questions, and generating stories. It’s clear Google sees value in introducing AI tools to younger users, likely aiming to foster early familiarity and literacy with this rapidly evolving technology. The company continues to stress that Gemini, like other large language models, “can make mistakes.” Parents are encouraged to guide their children in using the tool responsibly, emphasizing the need to “think critically about Gemini responses.” Google explicitly advises parents to remind their children that Gemini isn’t human, lacks independent thought and emotions despite its conversational abilities, and that its responses should be double-checked for accuracy.
Furthermore, caution against inputting sensitive or personal information is strongly advised. Acknowledging the inherent risks, Google also notes that while filters are in place to limit inappropriate content, they “aren’t perfect,” and children might still encounter unsuitable material. It’s crucial for parents to understand that the existing Google Assistant parental controls managed within Family Link will not apply to Gemini interactions.
Instead, specific controls for Gemini will appear within the “Controls” tab of the Family Link app or website, alongside settings for services like Google Play, YouTube, and Search. To aid families in navigating this new territory, Google is providing resources including an FAQ about Gemini Apps, a conversation guide for discussing AI, and a short video outlining key concepts for getting started with artificial intelligence.
At the end of the day, just like any other electronic device or service given to a child, this needs to be handled with care. I know I’ll be enabling this for my son ASAP, but he’s also 10 and old enough to understand the potential issues that can arise from a tool like Gemini. On the flip side of that, however, he’s beyond excited to be able to leverage this emerging AI and all the abilities it possesses.
And, truth be told, I’m excited for him to give it a go. He’s been so good at learning complex things like Unity for game building, 3D printing, and Wii mods that I think a tool like Gemini in the hands of a bright kid with limitless imagination could yield some really fun results. I can’t wait to let him know it will be available soon, and I’m certain he’ll be equally excited to give it a try.
