A compelling new mystery thriller series, which combines the horror and comedy genres, has been keeping fans “up until 5am”. The 2024, Hysteria!, takes a fascinating deep dive into the era of Satanic Panic in 1980s America - and now it’s coming to streaming in the UK. From May 16, the first three episodes of Hysteria! season 1 will drop on Paramount Plus in the UK, with the other five episodes dropping weekly after that.
Hysteria!’s small-town setting, supernatural themes and underlying sense of humour has also earned it many comparisons to Netflix ’s Stranger Things and the Scream film franchise. A synopsis from Paramount Plus reads: “When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the Satanic Panic of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town's sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band. The show stars some familiar faces, including Julie Bowen, who is best known for playing Claire Dunphy in ABC’s popular sitcom Modern Family. Other cast members include Anna Camp, Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia, Kezii Curtis and Nikki Hahn.
The show has scored an impressive 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critical consensus reading: “Freaky in both scares and style, Hysteria! will be a raucous good time for viewers who like their horror programming to have a sense of humor.” Viewers and critics alike shared their own thoughts on the new series, with one enthusing: “Loved it. It was original and different, I would love a 2nd season!” Another had particular praise for the music, writing: “Outstanding! The soundtrack is great.
