A father has praised the NHS after he claims a midwife saved the lives of his twin babies.

Bartlomiej Kulka said the NHS saved the lives of his twins, his daughter Susanne in particular. Bartlomiej said: "The NHS saved these babies. "I just want to say thank you to the staff who have delivered our babies, we’re lucky to have them.

" Michael and Susanne Kulka are the first twins to have been born in the new maternity and neonatal unit in Royal Bournemouth Hospital's BEACH building. Born on April 5 at around 6.30pm, the twins were born premature at only around 35 weeks.

The mother, Bagmara Kulka was receiving a check up at home by her midwife Emily, when something was wrong. Emily informed Bagmara that she needed to attend hospital immediately as she was concerned. After attending the hospital and being examined, it was clear Bagmara needed an emergency C-section as the girl twin, Susanne, was becoming increasingly 'weaker and weaker'.

Bartlomiej said: "If it wasn’t for Emily, there would’ve been a big chance that the girl wouldn’t survive. "She made the right decision at the right time. "Thanks to Emily and the NHS staff, we got two lovely and healthy babies.

" He added that both he and his wife are 'very grateful' for how they were treated by the maternity unit staff, stating that the treatment was 'fantastic throughout the process'. However, despite the attentiveness of the staff, Bartlomiej said the unit has been opened 'too early'. He recalls having to cut a zip tie in one of the showers as it was so new.

He said: "I think they opened it a little bit too early." Bartlomiej added that parents-to-be should go to the hospital before and check the route to the unit, as it isn't 'clear' and staff aren't 'really sure'. Describing the unit as a 'work in progress' he repeated that "when it comes to the staff themselves, they were nothing but excellent".

He said: "We were thinking about private care, but with the care that we have received, it cannot get any better than this. "We had more than we needed when it came to guidance and we're still getting aftercare, it's great.".
